Dr. Luis Velarde

Dr. Luis Velarde (Ph. D. University of Oregon, 2003) specializes in Latino American Literature and culture, Chicano Studies, and Ethnic Studies. Dr. Velarde's main scholarly interests include American Studies, modernism, literary and cultural theory, critical theory, film studies and sexuality studies.

Dr. Velarde has published in his field of interest and is currently working on a book-length study of contemporary Latino literature, which examines how the discourses of class, gender, race, and ethnicity, which serve to negotiate shifting positions of Latino identity against the backdrop of a post identity in a postmodern America, are now complicated by transnational discourses.

In addition to Latino Studies, Dr. Velarde teaches a variety of courses in the literature program.
