Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages

This certificate
• Consists of 12 hours of coursework
• Provides basic background and skills for those wishing to    become teachers of English as a second foreign language

Courses taken
• May also be counted toward the Master of Arts in Linguistics    with a concentration in English as a Second Language (ESL)
• Do not lead to teacher certification for Texas public schools

Prerequisites

  • LING 3060 Principles of Language Study
  • LING 4040 General Linguistics or
    LING 5040 Principles of Linguistics or
                         Equivalent as approved by
                         Director of Linguistics
  • GRE not required
  • TOEFL minimum score of 590 for non-native
                         English speakers

• General Linguistics

LING 5090 Pedagogical English Grammar or
LING 5300 Phonology or

LING 5330 Sociolinguistics or
LING 5350 Language Typology & Universals

• Language Acquisition

LING 5060 Second Language Acquisition or
LING 5390 Psycholinguistics

• Practicum

LING 5340 Practicum in Teaching English
                    as a Second Language
