Master of Arts in English as a Second Language (ESL)

Candidates may choose one of the following options:


Option I 30 hour program with Thesis

Requirements:
LING 5300 Phonology*
LING 5310 Syntax*
18 additional hours of graduate-level linguistics courses

Under this option, the candidate must write a thesis (6 hours of LING 5950), and must pass the oral comprehensive examination and prospectus defense.

A candidate is permitted to write a thesis only with the permission of the Chair of Graduate Studies and a major professor. No student who has permission to write a thesis or scholarly papers will be allowed to register for the relevant courses until the foreign language requirement has been met.


Option II 30 hour program with Scholarly Papers

Requirements:
LING 5300 Phonology*
LING 5310 Syntax*
18 additional hours of graduate-level linguistics courses

Under this option, the candidate must write two original scholarly papers (6 hours of LING 5920-5930), and must pass the oral comprehensive examination and prospectus defense.

A candidate is permitted to write scholarly papers only with the permission of the Chair of Graduate Studies and a major professor. No student who has permission to write a thesis or scholarly papers will be allowed to register for the relevant courses until the foreign language requirement has been met.


Option III 36 hour program with Written Exam

Requirements:
LING 5300 Phonology*
LING 5310 Syntax*
30 additional hours of graduate-level linguistics courses

Under this option, the candidate must take the Master's Comprehensive Examination in Linguistics.

*ENGL 4040 or LING 5040 or instructor's consent is required before the candidate may register for these courses
