The Department of English is guided by the complementary and inseparable missions of teaching and research. The English faculty achieve these missions in diverse ways: by calling attention to the complexity of the human condition as manifest in literary texts, by the scientific study of language, and by the analysis of writing techniques which clarify and enrich human communication.
