Graduate Scholarships

Mary Patchell Memorial Scholarships
The Mary Patchell Scholarships include two kinds of awards to graduate students majoring in English:

Mary Patchell Scholarship for Continuing Graduate Students
Scholarships of varying amounts to be given each year to continuing graduate student(s). The recipient(s) must have an outstanding record, as demonstrated by the following:

  • GRE scores (minimum of 70% verbal)
  • GPA (minimum of 3.5 on 4.0 scale); be sure to attach transcript.
  • Three recommendations from members of English faculty
  • A piece of scholarly writing by the student(s), either published or publishable

Recipients must enroll for at least 9 credit hours in each long semester during which they hold the scholarship. (Exceptions may apply to students close to graduation.)

Deadline for all applications is March 1. Send completed application form, most recent academic transcripts, test score reports, recommendation letters (in sealed envelopes), and the piece of writing.

Mary Patchell Scholarship for Incoming Graduate Students
Scholarships of varying amounts to be awarded to incoming graduate students who show special promise, as indicated by the following:

  • GRE score
  • GPA for all previous college work
  • Three letters of recommendations from college instructors, at least two being teachers of English
  • Writing sample

Recipients must enroll for at least 9 credit hours in each long semester during which they hold the scholarship.

Deadlines for application are June 1 and November 1. Supply brief letter of application, a letter of acceptance into the graduate program, letters of recommendation, and writing sample.

Ray C. Stoker Graduate Scholarship
The Ray Stoker Scholarship (variable amount) is open to a UNT student who is a candidate for a doctor of philosophy degree and whose major field of study is English. Applicants must have completed all doctoral examinations and be working on the dissertation. Selection will be based on the following criteria:

  • GPA (minimum of 3.5 for all graduate work)
  • A piece of scholarly writing
  • Letters of recommendation from three English
    faculty members
  • Participation in professional activities
  • Teaching performance (where applicable)

Deadlines for applications are March 1 and October 1. Supply official academic transcripts, writing sample, and letters of recommendation that describe professional activity and teaching performance (if applicable).

Janet P. Sholty Scholarship
The Janet P. Sholty Scholarship (variable amount) is open to graduate students in English who meet the entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the department’s graduate program at the time of the award and maintain full enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program. The scholarship will be awarded to graduate students who show their professional growth in these ways:

  • GPA of at least 3.5, with no outstanding incompletes
  • Presenting papers at professional meetings (especially those that require travel)
  • Other participation in professional activities

Deadlines for applications are March 1 and October 1. To apply, submit the following: a brief letter of application, academic transcripts (unofficial is fine), and a current vita.

Pearla Irene Marquez Memorial Scholarship in Medieval and Renaissance Studies
To be eligible for consideration, applicants for the scholarship (variable amount) must meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of English in effect at the time of any award. They must maintain three-fourth time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be three-fourth time remaining in their degree program, and also carry a 3.0 GPA on the 4.0 scale.

Deadline for applications is March 1; applicants must submit a ten-page, double-spaced essay on a Medieval or Renaissance topic.

Veta Watson Percy Scholarship
To be eligible for consideration, applicants for the scholarship must meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of English in effect at the time of any award. They must maintain full-time enrollment (9 hours) at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be three-fourth time remaining in their degree program, and also carry a 3.5 GPA on the 4.0 scale. Applicants must demonstrate financial need by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (or successor applicable document) to the University, and qualification for financial aid. Students already receiving financial aid should submit documentation of that aid.

Deadline for applications is March 1.

Elizabeth Lomax Memorial Presidential Scholarship
To be eligible for consideration, applicants for the scholarship (variable amount) must meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of English in effect at the time of any award. They must maintain three-fourth time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be three-fourth time remaining in their degree program, and also carry a 3.5 GPA on the 4.0 scale.

Deadline for applications is March 1; preference will be given to students engaged in studies that involve Western Civilization.
