THEA Tutorships

Graduate students in the Department of English may apply to teach ENGL 1200 (Developmental Writing) or to work as a THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment) Tutor if they have met the following requirements:

  • Bachelor of Arts in English
  • Minimum score in the 50th percentile (score of 470) on the verbal portion of the GRE
  • Complete Academic Assistantship application
  • Full-time status as a graduate student in the Department
    of English

Students who choose to pursue this option gain a variety of experience working with at-risk and/or international students by:

  • Tutoring students
  • Helping students pass the THEA exam
  • Preparing writing prompts
  • Grading essays
  • Offering review sessions
  • Preparing handouts
  • Enforcing course policies
