Scholarships
The Department of English offers the following scholarships
to undergraduate English majors:
Ernest S. Clifton Memorial Scholarship
This one-year scholarship is open to all undergraduate English
majors, including incoming freshmen, and is based on academic
performance in English courses, recommendations from two
English teachers, and overall academic performance.

Arthur Sampley Memorial Scholarship
This one-year scholarship is open to all junior and
senior English majors with at least one semester of work
completed at UNT. The award is based on excellence in an
original piece of fiction, poetry, drama, or in a personal
essay.

English Department Scholarship
This one-year scholarship is open to all junior and
senior English majors with at least one semester of work
completed at UNT. The award is based on academic performance
in college English courses, recommendations from two college
English instructors, and overall academic performance. (Amount

Mary E. Whitten Scholarship
This one-year scholarship is open to all undergraduate
English majors who are native Texans. The award is based
on recommendations from two English teachers and overall
academic performance.

Imogene Bentley Dickey Mohat Scholarship
This one-year scholarship is open to all undergraduate
English majors. The award is based on recommendations from
two English teachers and overall academic performance. Recipient
must be registered for at least 15 semester hours at the
time any part of the scholarship is received. (Amount varies)
Mary Patchell Scholarships
These are one-year scholarships for undergraduate
English majors. These scholarships require a minimum of
3.5 for English courses, with a minimum of 12 completed
hours (or the equivalent) of college English courses, and
two letters of recommendation from UNT English instructors.

Burlage Family Scholarship
This one-year scholarship is open to all undergraduate
English majors. The award is based on overall academic performance
and letters of recommendation from two college or
university instructors.

Veta Watson Percy Scholarship
This one-year scholarship is open to undergraduate English majors who demonstrate financial need either by submitting an application for Federal Student aid (or successor applicable document) to the University and qualifying for that aid or by submitting documentation of current financial aid. A minimum GPA of 3.0 and full-time enrollment (12 hours) are required.
Undergraduate Scholarship Payments and Requirements
Each of the undergraduate scholarships is paid in two installments
(fall and spring). The following qualifications apply to
all these scholarships:
- Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA on all college work completed,
or a total of 1000 on the SAT, or 24 in English on the
ACT for entering freshmen.
- The continuation of all scholarships into the second semester is contingent upon a student's maintaining a GPA of 3.0 in at least 12 semester hours of course work (15 for the Mohat) and making at least a grade of B in each English class.
- The student must be enrolled at UNT but does not have to be a Texas resident..
Send completed applications—including name, campus id number (or social security number), address, and telephone number; transcripts; proof of SAT or ACT scores for freshmen; required letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes; proof of native Texas residency, such as a birth certificate for Whitten applicants; pieces of creative writing for Sampley applicants; and evidence of financial need for Watson Percy applicants to the following address no later than March 1 of each year:

Deadlines
The application deadline for all undergraduate English scholarships
is March 1.
